• Notes

The family believes there was bad blood between Alice and Belle. Their last letter was in 1871 and it is thought that either Belle thought that Alice married beneath her, or that Belle was attracted to Charles Benham. Belle died in the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital. Beulah DuBois received a letter from the hospital informing her of Belle's death.
